According to the USDA Organic Integrity Database and the State Of New York, as of October 2020, only SIX PERCENT of the 720 registered hemp growers in the state grow USDA Certified Organic Hemp.
So why is it so hard to get USDA certified organic hemp in New York? The USDA will only allow a crop or product to be labeled organic only when it meets all of the standards necessary for certification. These standards include growing in soil that is pesticide free for a minimum of three years, passing rigorous third-party certifying inspections and following more strict cultivation standards. Every single item used in hemp cultivation must be present on a pre-approved National Organic Program List. These items are expensive and can limit the ability to mass produce cheap products. The organic requirements above can take years. Due to the higher standards, more strict requirements and additional costs, many companies are not able to certify.
